Route

The elie triathlon will be a relatively short course standard triathlon (ie. swim/bike/run), making full use of the surrounding landscape and beach. The distances are similar to a Sprint distance triathlon (ie. a half-Olympic distance).

Swim (approx 500-600m)

Route to start from the beach by the harbour (tide & wind permitting), heading to the beach by Telfer Wynd (new transition area, ie. NOT the breakwater). Wetsuits (bring your own) and swimming caps (provided) will be compulsory for safety reasons. Safety boats will mark the route for the swim. On exit from the swim, make sure you pass by the timing controller at the bottom of Telfer Wynd. A kayak will follow the last swimmer.

Cycle (approx 29km) - nb. revised map tbc

Turn right out of Telfer Wynd, through Elie High Street and follow signs for St Monans along the A917. Continue all the way through St Monans until you reach the left turn for the B942. Continue along the B942 until you reach a long straight and towards the end turn sharp left onto the B941, then at Kilconquhar turn left onto Balbuthie Rd to head back towards St Monans and rejoin the A917, then repeat the lap until Kilconquhar, before continuing straight on towards Elie, then right before Harbour House onto Bank Street, continue downhill until you reach the transition area on Telfer Wynd.

Run (approx 6km)

Starting from the transition area, the course will head onto the beach towards the breakwater, onto South Street, along Elie High Street then left into Elie estate, past Elie Primary school, the Pavilion, the 19th Hole, then round Chapel Green with a final run along Elie beach, finishing at the transition area.

Run in detail:

Leave the transition area on Telfer Wynd turning left onto the beach, up the breakwater and along South St, turn left up Rankeillor Street, then right past the Station Buffet bar towards St Monans, then left after 200m into Elie Estate/Elie House/Orangery. Continue on tarmac road for 1km past Elie House, as road gradually bears left. Upon reaching a metal fence, go through gate (on right), then continue along tarmac road (bears left past houses) for another 1km. Arrive at the main road into Elie and turn left, then take right at gate by Elie Primary school, along a grass path, through another gate and onto the nine-hole golf course. Watch for golfers driving on your right and cross the course with caution. Head for the tennis court area and pass by the Pavilion café, then continue in the same direction to the left of the golf course, alongside the 18th hole. Continue past the phone box, the 19th hole pub and along the road (all in the same direction). Follow this road (stay on the left of the golf course) all the way until you see a red bin on the right of the road and follow this track by the left of the 6th tee box/fairway, then take path to your left and follow the 8ft high stone wall left all the way round the perimeter of the large stone house at chapel green (anticlockwise). Upon reaching a turning circle (with yellow lines), follow the road to a grassy area and turn right onto the beach. Once on the beach, head back all the way to the start/finish at the transition area (nb. keep on the beach).
